Outstanding Wine Cellar
The fashion of modern Italian cooking with its lightness of touch, deconstruction and simplification of classical dishes has certainly touched this smartish Italian, but the basis of the menu here is still rooted in regional Italy, with the use of really good raw ingredients and plenty of long, slow cooking when appropriate. A starter of antipasto Pugliese with roasted begetables and a rich, flavoursome fava bean puree has all the beauty and colour of the former and makes a great contrast to the full old-fashioned potency of a ragu d’agnello served with pappardelle. The cooking’s perfectly competent, but what makes this restaurant really special is the wine list. Proprietor Giuseppe Turi has a passion for Italian wines and his 300 strong list, fully annotated and very fairly priced is an education in itself. Wines start at £3.75 and each dish on the menu has its own recommendation, but if diners wish to make their own choice, the staff are only too happy to help.
