Ian D'Agata

Ian D'Agata - wine writer and journalist
Ian D'Agata has been speaking and writing about Italian wines for over 30 years. A trained physician, his scientific background has characterised his work in the field of wine. Italy's best wine writer, and one of eight best international wine writers by Les Plumes d'Or in 2016, he is now Senior Editor of Vinous, Antonio Galloni's wine journal. He is also Creative director of Collisioni, Italy's biggest wine, food, literature and music festival, the Scientific director of Indigena, an annual event held in Barolo devoted to Italy's native wine grapes and wines, and the director of 3iC Italian International Indigenous Centre for Wine and Food Studies as well as the Scientific advisor of Vinitaly. His "Native Wine Grapes of Italy" was Book of the Year, Louis Roederer International Wine Awards 2015, and his new book "Italy's Native Wine Grape Terroirs" (University of California Press) will be out in the summer.

Enzo Pontoni

Enzo Pontoni - winemaker

Miani is Enzo Pontoni's mother's maiden name, and one gets the impression on meeting him that he didn't feel worthy enough to have his name on the bottle. Over 7ft tall, shy with bright blue eyes, he seems uncomfortable in his big frame, but his humility and gentle nature are more than compensated for by his greatness as a winemaker. He is arguably the best white wine producer in Italy today.

A trained engineer, he took over the family vineyards on the death of his father and thereby discovered his true passion. A reclusive maverick, he spends all day in the vineyards, making a miniscule quantity (20,000 bottles from 15 hectares, compared to the norm for quality wines of 60-80,000), because only if the wine is exceptional, does it go into Miani bottles. He transforms small yields of a dozen different varieties into delightful, rich wines, the result of which is a tiny line of decadent, complex wines, almost impossible to find on the open market.

A fastidious perfectionist, he vinifies all single parcels separately; truly exceptional wines are released with the name of the vineyard, excellent wines are released with the name of the grape variety; wines not quite up to that standard but still of very high quality are blended together to make Bianco Miani and Rosso Miani. But no wine will be bottled under the Miani label unless it reaches Enzo's exacting standard of excellence
